That did the trick, Michael! Thanks!!!

Actually I ended up using xf86config to set up the monitor
section...then I copied the monitor section into
the configure file created by XFree86 -configure



Just one minor detail...or two....
I did check the log and got these errors at the end. I know the first is
probably minor, and I'd probably
figure out the second without a lot of trouble...but I figure it doesn't
hurt to ask, in case they're easy answers


             Could not init font path element
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
             // I know CID present in the pathway, at least (I'm
assuming this is pretty insignificant)

            Failed to switch consoles (Inappropriate ioctl for device)
             // This happens when I try to switch consoles with
<cntl><alt><F1>
