Hmm, on 4.0 X -configure should do all you need.

That will need some trivial changes to xorg.conf after Xorg -configure.

I'm not sure the 4.0 ofwboot can boot the 5.0 kernel, it does work the  
other way around though so you can just upgrade kernel and loader,  
boot the 5.0 kernel, then upgrade userland.
The 3400c has OpenFirmware 2.0.1 and uses the partition zero boot  
method - you don't use ofwboot.xcf unless you boot from CDROM which  
should just work ( this OpenFirmware version seems much less broken  
than other 2.x, namely the infamous 2.0f from early G3s... )
