Ok, color depth has nothing to do with it. I changed back to
1024x768@75Hz 24-bit "millions" in MacOS X.
Basically, as long as I let MacOS X touch the display first and don't
power off, machfb works fine when rebooting with any NetBSD.
For figuring out the hangs with NetBSD-5, a GENERIC_OFB kernel with
"options DIAGNOSTIC" didn't produce any additional dmesg output.
A kernel with both "options DIAGNOSTIC" and "options DEBUG" produced
only one extra line about interrupt mapping for the ohci device:
