OK, slightly more subtle, just disable "atabus" and thats enough to let
it finish booting.  Updated 5.0 dmesg output (with correct URL this
time):

  http://bobdbob.com/~jdbaker/imac-GENERIC-nb5.txt

And the same for -current:

  http://bobdbob.com/~jdbaker/imac-GENERIC-current.txt

Going further down the tree (disable wd) has no effect and the machine
hangs as before.
