Does the network interface work right otherwise? I remember trouble  
with some MACEs that never got fixed ( IIRC it would go VERY slow and  
lose packets left and right ). There were commits years ago which made  
it work for most people ( including me ) but apparently not everyone.
If you have a PCI NIC sitting around you may want to give it a try.
