NetBSD 5.0.2 can't handle 7455 CPU @ 1 GHz?
My upgrade to 5.0.2 has hit a snag.
When I moved the disks from the "test" G4 tower system, to the "production"
tower system,
the OS will boot, but will not stay up. The same disks, same SW that was
running fine
in an almost identical G4 tower locks up either during fsck, or after loin. The
lockup is a hard freeze of some sort, no keyboard response at all, and ping's
don't respond.
At first I thought it was an issue with the HW I touched, so I re-seated the
PCI ATA board, ATA cables, and then the memory.
Same behavior.
I have included below the system log output from two boots: 1 from the
"failing" HW" and one
from the "working" HW - same system disk.
My nose tells me that the culprit here is the 7455 CPU in it. It's an
"upgrade" CPU, running
at 1 Ghz. Trouble is that it ran fine for 4 years in the same box with NetBSD
2.1, and
is running again now with the same NetBSD 2.1 SW.
It's just 5.0.2 that freezes up on the HW.
I have the 1 Ghz CPU box on the bench now, and can run some experimets. I'll
try to figure
out where in the stream (NetBSD 2, 3, 4, 5) it broke.
syslogs below.
