I noticed that running 

audioctl -w hiwat=1 lowat=1

results in a continuous choppy playback, however the max value the system 
allows to set are 

hiwat: -> 7
lowat: -> 6

Maybe there is a way to increase the buffer sizes so underruns don't happen?
