1) Is Xorg's sunffb driver much worse than XFree86?
If you mean the XFree86 that comes with NetBSD then the answer is
yes. Xorg's driver lacks a bunch of bugfixes and workarounds. It
should basically work but you'll see minor or not so minor glitches
depending on your ffb model. Also, nothing keeps you from using xorg
client libraries with the XFree86 Xserver. Another problem is that I
found a few more RGB vs. BGR bugs in XFree86 XAA's xrender support
code, it assumes that the target drawable is always RGB which is
obviously bogus on many Sun graphics boards. Easy to fix, I'll do it
in the near future. No idea if this stuff is fixed in Xorg but given
their focus on PCish hardware I doubt it.
2) If above is true, then can Xorg use compatible PC video card on
Ultra 10 if
I plug it into a spare PCI slot?
Yes, if you find one that comes with Sun firmware. They sold a few
ATI and 3Dlabs ones under their own name - the PGX32 is a Permedia2,
the XVR-100 is a Radeon and the other PGXes are different mach64
variants.
have fun
