Ok.
I've installed OpenBSD 5.2 now on exactly this machine, booted the
installed system and it is now doing one of the last steps before
it is ready to use, it is generating the ssh host key (which seems to
take ages..)
The installation went ok w/o any glitch, no coredump, no illegal
instruction.
I've stopped the generation of the ssh host key since it wanted to run for
ages..
Here ist the OpenBSD log:
http://www.tiffe.de/other/openbsd.instlog
I had some mails in the meantime with Martin and he suggest's to ask here
if one has an actual NetBSD or a -current running on a similar VAX Station.
Again, I'm currently have an VS3100 M38 on the table, equipped with 24MB
RAM, I'm also interested in the Results for an VS3100 M76 with 16MB RAM
since I've tried on this machine before and the results where very similar
on ther uglyness at all. Currently on this machine is OpenBSD 5.2 which is
the cause that I had the openBSD files handy here.
I'm not interested in Results from SIMH or in "should work"s at all. I know
that it should, but I'm pretty sure it dosn't work. At least not the
install with netbooting using that
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-6.1_RC2/vax/installation/netboot/install.ram.gz
install kernel.
Again: I've used the distribution files from NetBSD.org, not anything self
build or modified.
After the test above now again netbsd on the same machine with a freshly
downloaded isntall.ram.gz file:

This menu-driven tool is designed to help you install NetBSD to a hard disk,
or upgrade an existing NetBSD system, with a minimum of work.
In the following menus type the reference letter (a, b, c, ...) to select an
item, or type CTRL+N/CTRL+P to select the next/previous item.
The arrow keys and Page-up/Page-down may also work.
Activate the current selection from the menu by typing the enter key.

You have chosen to install NetBSD on your hard disk. This will change
information on your hard disk. You should have made a full backup before
this procedure! This procedure will do the following things:[K
a) Partition your disk[K
b) Create new BSD file systems[K
c) Load and install distribution sets[K
d) Some initial system configuration[K
[K
(After you enter the partition information but before your disk is changed,
you will have the opportunity to quit this procedure.)

The NetBSD distribution is broken into a collection of distribution sets.
There are some basic sets that are needed by all installations and there are
some other sets that are not needed by all installations. You may choose to
install a core set (Minimal installation), all of them (Full installation) or
you select from the optional distribution sets.

NetBSD uses a BSD disklabel to carve up the NetBSD portion of the disk into
multiple BSD partitions. You must now set up your BSD disklabel.
You can use a simple editor to set the sizes of the NetBSD partitions, or
keep the existing partition sizes and contents.
You will then be given the opportunity to change any of the disklabel fields.

You can now change the sizes for the system partitions. The default is to
allocate all the space to the root file system, however you may wish to have

I've just pressed a to chose the partitioning...that nice looking curses wasn't

So NetBSD is broken, not my machine.
