  What the heck does "outdated" have to do with it?

  While there are plenty of VAXen running in production today, I doubt
any of them are running NetBSD.  Maintaining NetBSD on VAX is important
from the standpoints of portability and performance.

  And fun, yes, but that's not a practical consideration.
