There is a SCSI Communication Device standard. Some people even used it
to connect two or more computers in a cluster and there is an experimental
RFC2143 for encapsulating IP over SCSI.
The device type itself is unspecific enough to allow Ethernet as a medium
but I doubt it was ever used that way.
The Cabletron device is older and doesn't follow a standard.
