I don't like it either, but my short-term goal is to make it quick and easy for scientists to bootstrap a working 2017Q2 tree on CentOS 6, and this may end up being our best option for a workaround.
As we've just ramped up efforts to promote pkgsrc to the HPC community, we need to remove as many hurdles as possible, so those who are curious come away with a good first impression.
Hopefully we'll find consensus on a permanent solution for platforms with older compilers soon...
