you don't have to use "startkde" to run kde applications. just try
to use them. i use kde applications regularly using ctwm. you should
be able to use them with xfce4.
you only need to bother with startkde if you want to run full kde
desktop. in which case, figuring out kdm is useful, or, simply
adjust your x11 startup to call startkde instead of xfce4 as the
window manager.
