How can you need more than 256 colours in a terminal? Xterm has the same limit. Of course xterm is also an OK terminal emulator, but I don't know that I would want to use it in the normal macos desktop environment, i.e. in Aqua with quartz-wm. It doesn't do cut&paste in the macos-way and so it can get confusing if you're using it side-by-side with macos apps. I only use it as my terminal when running XQuartz in full-screen mode. In fact I do all my normal email, programming, and sysadmin work in full X11 with XQuartz in full-screen mode (and browsing, photography, etc., in native macos Aqua). Terminal does have slightly better support for cut&paste of whitespace than xterm, and also has better support for preserving existing text when resizing the window. I've never found any value whatsoever in any replacement for Terminal. All the ones I have tried, including iTerm2, have more bugs and limitations and no compelling features. I too find it insane that all these terminal emulator apps also include SSH clients, even FLterm! My only complaint about Terminal is that it is too paternalistic w.r.t. allowing windows to be closed or for itself to be quit if it thinks there might be something running, and configuring this feature is difficult. It does also use too much memory, especially with a large scrollback buffer, and so if you have too many windows and/or tabs open it can end up taking too long to quit, even on a machine with ample free memory. -- Greg A.
