Things like this lead me to suspect overly-aggressive optimisation,
as I've been burned by such in the past...

I realized that a couple of hour later.  Attention was divided when I
wrote the previous message.

I'm updating for the alternate set of machines now.  If they complain,
I'll try out the patch.  Actually, I'll try it on them anyway.
