Sure, and I'm guessing OpenBSD does something similar, except with an
MSDOS image.

Seems to me that MSDOS would be easier to implement with already
available tools (no pkgsrc required) and it could be done when
building from source easier. We wouldn't have to include a binary file
in the source tree, although I guess that's not really a huge deal
either.
